JPS signs PPAs for 78 MW of green energy projects in Jamaica

Sep 19, 2014 - Electricity distributor Jamaica Public Service Co Ltd (JPS) said yesterday it had signed 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with three firms that will develop 78 MW of renewable energy projects in the country.

Under the new contracts, JPS will purchase the output of two wind farms and one solar park. The first wind project will be developed by BMR Jamaica Wind Ltd to the south of Malvern, St Elizabeth. It will have a capacity of 34 MW and will take up a total investment of some USD 90 million (EUR 70m). Wigton Wind Farm will develop the second one for a total cost of USD 46 million. That wind park will be located in Southern Manchester and will total 24 MW. Meanwhile, US-based WRB Enterprises Inc, through Content Solar Ltd, will build a 20-MW solar plant worth USD 60 million in Content Village, Clarendon.

The three projects are seen to be completed by the end of next year. Their construction will help Jamaica reduce its reliance on oil imports.

In March 2014, JPS commissioned its 9th hydroelectric facility, located on the Black river. The plant was built for a total cost of more than USD 36 million.
