Juwi, SPIES inaugurate 10-MW solar park in Germany Inauguration of 10 MW solar park in Gesmold

German renewables developer Juwi GmbH has cut the ribbon on a 10-MW solar facility that will supply with green power local plastic packaging manufacturer SPIES Packaging, the companies said on Thursday.

The electricity from the Gesmold solar park in Germany’s Lower Saxony state will be delivered via a direct line to the plant of SPIES.

The solar facility will generate around 10 million kWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of about 2,857 households. The packaging manufacturer will use between 70% and 80% of the power. The excess amount will be fed into the public grid. Overall, SPIES expects to cover about 20% of its needs with the electricity it produces itself.

Juwi, which developed the park, will be now responsible for its technical management.

"By using green electricity directly for our production, we are significantly reducing our carbon footprint and at the same time strengthening our competitiveness, security of supply and location security. This is a decisive step on our path to climate neutrality at the Gesmold site,” SPIES CEO Christof Spies commented.

As part of its goal to achieve climate-neutral production at its Gesmold site, SPIES has been investing in a variety of energy efficiency measures, such as the modernisation of ventilation, lighting and compressed air systems and the renewal of production lines.
