Juwi Wind builds 30-MW community wind project in Minnesota

Feb 27, 2013 - German renewable projects developer Juwi announced Tuesday the launch of commercial operation of a 30-MW wind power project in Nobles County, Minnesota built by its Juwi Wind LLC unit.

The plant operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL). The power it generates is enough to cover the needs of 10,000 households.

Development of the project began in 2003 and has been strongly supported by the local community. The community invested some USD 67 million (EUR 51m) in the installation of the 15 REpower MM92 2-MW units.

Construction of the Community Wind South Project was completed in 2012 and its daily operations will be managed by Juwi Wind.

The company has been expanding its transmission network to ensure enough capacity for the rise in renewable power generation, driven by Minnesota's target of achieving 30% green energy by 2020.
