Mingyang sets up wind turbine manufacturing JV in S Korea
Sep 05, 2024 13:32 CESTDanish engineering consultancy K2 Management (K2M) announced it has been hired as owner’s engineer for a portion of a 3.2-GW offshore wind project under development in the waters of South Korea.
K2M has been tapped for the MyeongRyang Offshore Wind project, the initial phase of the larger complex. It involves the construction of a fixed-bottom offshore wind farm with an installed capacity of around 420 MW.
The MyeongRyang station will be located off the coast of Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do. Construction works are set to start in 2028. The project is led by Pacifico Energy Korea (PEK), a subsidiary of US renewable energy developer Pacifico Energy.
K2M will provide support in overall project management and will conduct wind analysis, metocean studies, make conceptual designs and prepare and select contractors for site investigation. It will also offer technical support throughout the site investigation process, as well as assistance in obtaining permits.
The Danish firm started work on the project in December and expects to remain actively involved until 2025, according to a statement released Wednesday.
The gigawatt-scale offshore wind project will be made up of three generation facilities. Once completed, it is expected to produce enough electricity to power around three million households. Apart from Pacifico Energy, other participants include Hyundai Electric, CS Wind, Korea Ocean Engineering & Consultants and Daebul Shipbuilding.
