Iberdrola inaugurates 496-MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm offshore France
Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTThe Kenya Power and Lighting Company Plc has launched a tender for the delivery of solar mini grids in a number of underserved areas in the country.
Under documents published earlier this month, the company will award contracts across eight lots, each targeting the construction of at least two or at least three mini-grids.
It is seeking bids for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of photovoltaic (PV) mini-grids in Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana river, Lamu, Narok, Kilifi and Kwale Counties, along with a seven-year operations and maintenance (O&M) service provision.
The deadline for submissions is September 26.
The tender is part of the Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project for Underserved Counties (KOSAP), a USD-150-million programme financed by the World Bank, which aims to establish nearly 150 new mini grids in regions with limited electricity accessibility.
In a February 2023 announcement by the World Bank focused on solar mini grids, Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, said that Kenya had about 62 operational mini grids as well as 28 under construction and that it was looking to deploy more to ensure universal access to electricity by 2030.
