Kuwait has launched a tender seeking to award 1.1 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity as part of the 4.5-GW Shagaya solar project.

The Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, has invited interested developers to apply for the request for qualifications (RFQ) to participate in the competition, Kuwaiti newspaper Alanba reports.

The winner will be in charge of designing, financing, building, operating and maintaining the Al-Shaqaya solar project.

The land plot for the solar farm is located in the Al-Shaqaya area, Al-Jahra Governorate about 100 kilometres (62.14 miles) west of Kuwait City.

The electricity from the plant will be fed into the national power grid under a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the ministry.

The other phases of the solar complex will include a 200-MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with a storage capacity of about five hours as well as 1,500 MW of solar PV and the last one will add 1,700 MW, a representative of the ministry said last October.
