Kuwait plans to launch a tender for the construction of a 1-GW solar power station in the first quarter of next year, an official told Bloomberg.

Shukri AbdulAziz Al-Mahrous, deputy CEO of planning and finance at Kuwait National Petroleum Co, told the news agency that companies can express interest in taking part in this tender by September 7. According to him, the total cost of the project is estimated at about USD 1.2 billion (EUR 1bn).

The plan is to complete the solar park by the end of 2020. The facility, to be located in the country’s northwest, is expected to save burning 5.2 million barrels of oil a year and cut annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 1.3 million tonnes, Al-Mahrous has said.

Kuwait has set a target of generating 15% of its power from renewables by 2030.
