LEAG breaks ground on 31 MW solar project in Germany Jaenschwalde I solar park project

Energy company LEAG has started the construction of a 31 MW solar park in the area of the former Jaenschwalde open-pit mine in eastern Germany as part of a plan to turn the entire mining region into a green energy powerhouse.

The Jaenschwalde I park will consist of around 55,000 modules located on an area of 40 hectares (98.84 acres). The plant is expected to generate electricity sufficient to meet the needs of nearly 9,000 three-person households.

The project is part of the GigawattFactory initiative under which LEAG aims to build up to 7 GW of renewables in Germany’s mining region Lusatia with a total investment of EUR 10 billion (USD 11.1bn) by 2030.

As part of the plan, LEAG has already brought projects with a combined capacity of 4 GW in the active development phase. A total of 11 projects in Lusatia and central Germany are currently under construction, the company said.
