Three local companies have signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Lebanon’s Ministry of Energy and Water for 200 MW of wind power in total, it was announced on Friday.

The three firms are Hawa Akkar, Lebanon Wind Power and Sustainable Akkar. They will be selling power from new wind farms to the government under 20-year deals. The contracts could be extended, according to Hawa Akkar chairman Albert Khoury, who spoke to Reuters. He further said that the turbines Hawa Akkar plans to install should be up and running in 2020.

The news agency quoted Energy and Water Minister Cesar Abi Khalil as saying that a further 300 MW of wind power generating capacity could be added.

Lebanon’s goal is to produce 12% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. The country currently has some 2 GW of power generating capacity versus peak summer demand of more than 3 GW, Reuters said.
