A newly-formed coalition of leftists called the New Popular Front (NFP) has achieved a surprise win in France’s snap elections on Sunday by securing the most seats in the National Assembly, though not enough for an absolute majority.

The left-wing coalition won 182 seats, which is more than the 163 secured by President Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble alliance and the 143 seats earned by Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party. The number of seats required for an absolute majority is 289, far more than what any party or coalition won in this particular election.

Pre-election, the Jean-Luc Melenchon-headed NFP committed to making France the European leader in marine energies with a focus on offshore wind and tidal power. Furthermore, it intends to pass an energy-climate law and implement a climate plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

NFP has also pledged to prevent companies developing new fossil fuel projects from getting bank financing.
