Legal changes in Nicaragua not to affect renewables - report

Nicaragua's lawmakers approved reforms of two energy laws on Thursday without changing the rules for the renewable energy sector, local daily El Nuevo Diario reported.

A bill, which originally stated that renewable energy would be cheaper than thermal power, was modified to ensure that the price of renewables will be determined based on international trends instead of on thermal generation costs, Walmaro Gutierrez, chairman of the production, economy and budget committee, said.

The energy ministry will publish and update the price range for renewable energy, while the regulator will make monthly adjustments due to variations in production costs, taking into account all measures in the law.

The modifications to the bill came after a meeting between the government and the private sector.
