Lekela starts building 158-MW wind park in Senegal

Renewable power producer Lekela has formally initiated construction work on West Africa’s first utility-scale wind farm -- the 158.7-MW Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye in Senegal.

The wind park is being built in the Taiba N’Diaye area, where it will create up to 400 jobs during the process. Completion is scheduled for 2020, when the plant will start generating over 450,000 MWh of electricity a year.

Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) is supplying 46 units of its V126-3.45 MW turbines for this project. In addition to installing them, the Danish company will also service the machines over a period of 20 years.

Lekela is 60%-owned by Actis and 40% by a group led by Mainstream Renewable Power, with investors such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Its current portfolio includes over 1,300 MW of renewables in operation, under construction and in development across Egypt, Ghana, Senegal and South Africa.
