Germany’s Schwarz Group, owner of Lidl and Kaufland, said today that the two retailers have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with RWE Supply and Trading to procure electricity from the Kaskasi offshore wind farm.

The contract, starting in 2028, will provide the two chains with roughly 250 million kWh of offshore wind power per year over a period of 10 years.

German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) recently announced the official start of operations of its 342-MW Kaskasi offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

According to Schwarz Group, Lidl and Kaufland are the first corporate customers to enter into a PPA for the Kaskasi wind farm.

The deal supports Schwarz Group’s climate strategy, which calls for a 55% reduction in operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. The group has been using 100% renewable electricity since the 2022 financial year and is now lining up another green power source through the contract with RWE.
