UK-based global solar developer Lightsource bp has sined a virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with Swedish fashion chain H&M Group that will facilitate the construction of a 125-MW solar park in Texas.

The contract will back the ongoing installation of the Second Division photovoltaic (PV) park in Brazoria County, the wholly-owned unit of BP Plc (LON:BP) said on Thursday. Once up and running, the plant will help the fashion group lower the carbon footprint from its operations, offsetting some 155,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

The Second Division plant is slated to begin operations by the end of this year. Its output will be equal to the annual electricity consumption of around 20,5000 homes.

H&M Group and Lightsource bp have been partnering since 2021 when they committed to a multi-year power contract for projects enabling the renewables expansion. The collaboration is aligned with the fashion brand’s goal of sourcing only renewable electricity in its own operations by 2030, of which over 50% from PPAs with new projects, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
