UK-based solar energy producer Lightsource bp said on Tuesday it had launched construction of a 112-MW/148-MWp utility-scale solar project in Trinidad and Tobago.

The project owners are bp Alternative Energy Trinidad and Tobago (bpAETT) and Shell Renewables Caribbean (Shell), the respective units of oil majors BP Plc (LON:BP) and Shell Plc (LON:SHEL).

Lightsource bp took credit for negotiations and development of the project. The firm will also oversee the construction process on behalf of BP and Shell, it said.

The main contractors are Spain’s Grupotec Servicios Avanzados SA and Trinidad and Tobago-based SDV West Indies.

The solar farm will take up two sites - Brechin Castle and Orange Grove. According to Lightsource bp, it is the first utility-scale solar project for the Caribbean island nation.

Once up and running, the solar farm will generate around 300 GWh of electricity per year, or enough to power some 42,500 Trinidadian homes, the press release reads.
