Chinese photovoltaics (PV) manufacturer Longi Solar today said that its modules will be powering the 800-MWp Al Kharsaah solar complex in Qatar.

The huge PV park will be equipped with two million of Longi’s Hi-MO 4 bifacial PV modules, which are planned to be switched on later this year. Inverters for the project are being delivered by China’s Sungrow Power Supply under a contract placed in 2020.

Located in a tropical desert area 80 km (49.7 miles) west of Doha, the solar farm will cover 10 sq km (3.9 sq miles). It will be the first one of this size in Qatar and the world’s largest complex combining bifacial modules and solar tracking systems, Longi said.

The Al Kharsaah project is owned by a tie-up of Japan’s Marubeni Corp and French energy major TotalEnergies, which jointly own 40%, while the remaining 60% are held by Siraj Energy. The latter is a joint venture between Qatari state-owned entities Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and Qatar Petroleum.

The capacity is being installed in two phases of 400 MWp each, the first one of which will be completed in the first half of 2022. The entire capacity will be hooked to the grid by the end of the year, according to TotalEnergies.
