UK renewable energy company Low Carbon announced today the sale of a 6-GW battery energy storage (BESS) portfolio to S4 Energy, a Dutch grid-scale energy storage developer and operator majority-owned by global merchant firm Castleton Commodities International (CCI).

The portfolio comprises a mix of early, mid and advanced-stage developments, Low Carbon told Renewables Now when approached for details.

The storage assets, described as one of the largest utility-scale battery storage portfolios brought to market, were developed by LC Energy, a joint venture between Low Carbon and Dutch engineering firm Qing.

Further details about the transaction, including financial terms, were not disclosed.

“This investment marks a transformative step for our platform, S4 Energy, and brings us closer to our objective of establishing a fully integrated, pan-European battery energy storage system platform,” said Mohit Singh, principal in CCI’s European Principal Investments team.

S4 Energy has 60 GWh of operational and under construction battery assets and a pipeline of 1,050 MWh in development, according to its website. Among the company’s most recent projects is the 10-MW/40-MWh Zeeland battery, its third energy storage location in Rilland, which is set to become operational by mid-2025.
