Maine resort installs solar thermal facility for spa building

Apr 4, 2012 - The Cliff House Resort & Spa in the US state of Maine unveiled today the completion of a huge solar thermal installation estimated to cut the fossil fuel consumption of the resort's spa building by 30%.

The solar thermal installation is to save over 140,000 gallons (530,000 litres) of carbon dioxide emission a year, The Cliff House calculates. It will supply heat and hot water for the spa building's 32 guest and 10 treatment rooms.

Nelson & Small Energy Conservation Products Inc, an affiliate of Nelson & Small Inc, acted as general contractor to the project, which includes 2,100 tubes on 70 collectors. Cimino Construction Co installed the structural steel framework supporting the collectors and supervised the development.

The Cliff House took advantage of a grant from the US Department of Agriculture and federal tax credits to cover part of the project expenses. This incentives will allow the resort to cut payback time to below six year, it said.
