Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power has signed a grid connection agreement with Ghana Grid Co Ltd (GRIDCo) for the 225-MW Ayitepa wind project on the eastern coast of the African country.

The company said in a statement on Wednesday that this is a substantial step towards preparing the roughly USD-525-million (EUR 468.5m) project to enter the construction phase in early 2016.

Commenting on the deal, Mainstream’s development manager for Africa, Liam Leahy, said that this is the first renewable energy grid connection agreement in Ghana to date. The connection will be implemented via a new transmission substation to be built between the villages of Sege and Dawa in the Greater Accra Region.

Mainstream acquired the utility-scale project from Swiss-based developer NEK Umwelttechnik last year. Upon completion, the wind farm is seen to meet up to 5% of Ghana’s electricity demand.
