Mainstream Renewable to sell 7.7-MW Irish wind farm to Ikea

Aug 12, 2013 - Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power said Monday it had agreed to sell at completion its 7.65-MW Carrickeeny wind farm in northwestern Ireland to Swedish furniture retailer Ikea.

The deal comes in line with the buyer's plan to generate from renewables as much power as it consumes by the end of the decade. Once it becomes the owner of the Carrickeeny wind farm, it will have 137 own wind turbines.

The targeted facility is already under construction and is expected to commence operations in the first months of 2014. Mainstream will remain in charge of the operations and maintenance for the wind farm’s 20-year life. The seller's CEO Eddie O'Connor said that it was attracting the interest of “a growing number of energy-intensive corporations in the retail, IT and mining sectors who want to invest in our large portfolio of wind and solar plant being developed across four continents”.

Earlier in August, Japanese trader Marubeni Corp (TYO:8002) said it would spend up to EUR 100 million (USD 133m) on a 25% interest in Mainstream Renewable Power, becoming its second largest shareholder.
