Special purpose vehicle JCM Matswani Solar Corp Ltd (ProjectCo) is seeking to award a contract for the construction and operation of a 40-MW solar project in Malawi.

The Request for Expression of Interest, published on the website of Infraco Africa, one of ProjectCo’s owners, is for a grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Malawi’s Salima district.

Applications in the prequalification process will be accepted by March 2, 2018. Up to five companies will be shortlisted to take part in the final tender and submit detailed proposals, with their names to be announced on March 9.

The winner in the auction will also build the project’s transmission infrastructure and will take the responsibility of the plant’s operations and maintenance (O&M).

Malawi-based ProjectCo is backed by InfraCo Africa Ltd, Canadian private equity firm JCM Power and South Africa’s Matswani Capital (PTY) Ltd.

Malawi has been suffering frequent power outages as severe drought conditions have caused power generation from hydropower facilities to drop in recent months. ESCO has committed to add 70 MW of solar power capacity to the national grid by contracting independent power producers.
