The Electricity Generation Co Malawi Ltd (EGENCO) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EoI) for the construction of a 10-MW photovoltaic (PV) power system in Malawi’s Central Region.

The scope of work will cover the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the PV plant, as well as the provision of auxiliary equipment and related works. The facility, itself, will be erected at Nanjoka in Salima township.

An announcement for the tender opportunity was made by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) last week. The agency pointed out that the EOI is a potential opportunity for US engineering firms with activities in Sub-Saharan Africa’s utility-scale solar sector.

Submissions in response to the EoI invitation are due by March 7, 2019. According to the statement, EGENCO has already secured land for expanding the solar park with another 10-MW system.

Malawi, the landlocked country in southeast Africa aims to reach 30% access to energy by 2030, with the share rising to 60% by 2040.
