Malta launches EUR 21m in incentives for solar projects - report

May 6, 2013 - Malta has introduced an EUR-21-million (USD 28m) programme to support the installation of solar power facilities for homes and businesses, newspaper Malta Today wrote on Thursday.

Under the scheme, launched with the aid of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Malta will pay a feed-in tariff (FiT) of EUR 0.22 for each kWh produced by solar facilities and fed into the grid. The tariff will be paid during the system's first six years of operation, after which its output will be sold according to the regular tariffs in the country.

In addition, consumers will be eligible for a 50% financial support of up to EUR 2,500 for buying photovoltaic (PV) equipment.

The FiT scheme is expected to channel EUR 42 million into Malta's economy, helping as many as 8,000 households and 50 buinesses go green, according to the country's energy minister Konrad Mizzi.

The weekly edition also quoted Mizzi as saying that the government will restart subsidies for solar water heaters, roof insulation and double glazing. It plans to allocate a total of EUR 600,000 for that purpose. The programme will last one year, or until the depletion of the funds.
