Mammoet hired to install turbines for Djibouti's 1st wind farm

Dutch company Mammoet, a specialist in heavy lifting and transport services, has been hired to install 59 MW of turbines for the first wind farm project in Djibouti.

Mammoet Djibouti, the regional office for the company’s Horn of Africa and East Africa operations, has been awarded the contract by wind turbine maker and the project’s chief builder Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE).

Mammoet’s job will be to offload and assemble 17 units of the SGRE 3.4-MW turbines. Its machinery will haul and lift 68 towers, 51 blades, 17 nacelles, drive trains and hubs, Mammoet said.

Djibouti’s first wind farm will be located near the Goubet cove at a site spanning 395 hectares (976 acres). Commissioning is scheduled in 2021, Mammoet added.

The project’s lead developer is Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), which secured a 25-year take-or-pay power purchase agreement (PPA) to place the wind farm’s output with public utility Electricite de Djibouti.
