October 22 (Renewables Now) – Mariel Solar is to soon begin installation of a photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 102-GWh annual generation, Cuban official state news agency Prensa Latina reports.

The president of Mariel Solar, Bernardo Fernandez, briefed Prensa Latina that the company has secured the financing for the project and the construction is expected to start in November.

The park will be built in the western Special Development Zone of Mariel (ZEDM) and will extend over 118 hectares (291.59 acres), Fernandez indicated in an exclusive statement to the news agency. He also pointed out that the three different locations of the park will feature over 300,000 panels in total.

As part of the development programme of Cuba for change of energy balance, until 2030 it is estimated that renewable energy sources should provide for 24% of all the power generated in the country.
