Canada’s Marmen Energie will relaunch wind tower manufacturing activities in Matane, Quebec thanks to a contract for the 350-MW Pohenegamook-Picard-Saint-Antonin-Wolastokuk (PPAW) Wind Energy Centre.

The news was announced on Monday jointly by Marmen, US developer Invenergy, the Alliance de l’energie de l’Est and Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS).

Marmen has been awarded a wind tower supply contract for the project, which is being developed in an equal partnership between Invenergy and the Alliance de l’energie de l’Est and will use 56 Vestas’ Enventus V162-6.2 MW turbines.

“We are pleased with the trust Vestas has placed in us to manufacture the 56 wind towers that will make up the PPAW wind project and are grateful for the leadership of Invenergy and the Alliance de l’energie de l’Est, to increase the Quebec content of their project, without any local content requirements,” said Marmen president Patrick Pellerin. The company will deliver 336 tower sections in 2025 and 2026. As a result of the contract, it will hire 100 employees, adding to the 20 jobs that are still maintained at its Matane facility.

The PPAW project will also create 350 jobs during its construction and 23 permanent jobs over its 30-year operational lifespan. The project was selected by Hydro-Quebec Distribution in 2023 as part of a call for tenders.

Commenting on the announcement, Michael Perkins, vice president, procurement, Vestas North America, said: “This is a significant milestone towards achieving Quebec’s ambitious net zero goals, led by Hydro-Quebec’s strategy of adding 10 GW of wind power generation by 2035, and is confirmation of our shared vision for a clean energy future.”

To meet its December 2026 commissioning target, the PPAW project plans to secure necessary approvals at the end of 2024 and start construction in 2025.
