Masdar City to test water-from-air tech powered by renewables

A pilot project to extract clean water from the atmosphere using renewable energy will kick off this month at Abu Dhabi’s innovation and sustainability hub Masdar City, Masdar said on Sunday.

The project is a partnership between US water technologies company AQUOVUM LLC, Masdar, which is part of Abu Dhabi government's Mubadala Investment Company, and Khalifa University of Science and Technology.

The 12-month initiative will assess AQUOVUM’s large-format Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) technology which can ensure commercial volumes of an uninterrupted water supply, a key issue especially for hot climate areas. It will run on renewable energy, making the process carbon neutral.

The technology will be installed at Khalifa University’s Masdar Institute Solar Platform. It will be fuelled by green power provided by Swedish company Azelio AB’s demonstrator of 24/7 electrical thermal energy storage at the Masdar Institute Solar Platform.

"Technology that extracts clean water from the air in commercial volumes and operates using clean energy, will help in securing and developing all life sources and serving the national interests," said AQUOVUM Middle East chief executive Mohamed Al Qubaisi.
