UAE renewables developer Masdar has sealed another deal on the sidelines of the COP29 climate summit in Baku, this time for the implementation of a 1-GW wind farm project in Uzbekistan.

The company has signed a joint study agreement with the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan that will pave the way for developing the project in the Asian country’s Mingbulak region. The deal, which comes on the heels of an investment agreement for a 1-GW project in Kazakhstan, represents the first phase of a border plan covering the construction of three wind farms in Uzbekistan, Masdar said on Thursday.

The Mingbulak project is expected to create 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and another 60 positions during the plant’s operational lifespan. Once installed, the wind farm will generate electricity for about 300,000 local homes.

At end-2023, Masdar signed an implementation agreement for the development of 2 GW of wind projects in Uzbekistan. This will facilitate the construction of two wind parks in the country’s Karakalpakstan and Navoiy regions.

Masdar, which owns the 500-MW Zarafshan wind farm in Uzbekistan, has committed to supporting the national goal of achieving a 40% share of renewables by 2030.
