Renewables developer Masdar and Emirates Steel Arkan (ADX:EMSTEEL) are working on a pilot green hydrogen project aimed at the decarbonisation of steel production in the United Arab Emirates.

The demonstration facility is being built at the Emirates Steel Arkan production facilities in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi with the installation of electrolysers already underway. Commissioning is slated for early 2024, Masdar said on Wednesday.

The green hydrogen produced at the site will be used to replace natural gas in the process of extracting iron from iron ore which is part of steelmaking.

"As the first steel company in the MENA region, and among the pioneers worldwide to adopt green hydrogen for sustainable steel production, this project represents a major milestone in our commitment to realize our company’s sustainability objectives," commented Emirates Steel Arkan's chief executive Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi.

The Abu Dhabi-based steel and building materials manufacturer aims to cut its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050. The company is already using clean electricity, carbon capture and scrap metals to reduce its emissions and emissions intensity.
