Masdar inks agreement for 100-MW solar farm in Georgia

Masdar inks agreement for 100-MW solar farm in Georgia Solar farm. Author: Alan Levine.

Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company Masdar will build a solar park of up to 100 MW in Georgia together with the state-owned Georgian Energy Development Fund (GEDF).

Masdar announced today the signing of a joint development agreement (JDA) for the project, without revealing specific details such the location and construction schedule. Once built, this would be the country’s largest solar farm, the company said.

The project is being developed as part of a larger framework agreement that Masdar and GEDF signed earlier in 2021 to develop renewable energy projects in Georgia. Currently, the country mainly relies on hydropower plants and it is looking to diversify the mix.

“Development of similar projects will strengthen the energy security of Georgia, contribute to diversification of energy sources and increase the share of renewable energy in the power generation mix,” commented GEDF chief executive George Chikovani.

GEDF was founded by Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
