A joint venture between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, better known as Masdar, and W Solar Investment will be exploring the development of at least 500 MW of clean energy projects in water-rich Tajikistan, including floating solar and hydropower.

The JV, called MW Energy, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tajikistan’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MOEWR) to support the Central Asian nation’s energy diversification goals, Masdar announced on Tuesday.

The agreement calls for the creation of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to develop solar photovoltaic (PV), wind and hydropower projects. According to the announcement, the aforementioned 500 MW of capacity represents just the first phase of the partnership.

“A significant increase in generation is planned through the introduction of renewable energy. By 2030, the installed capacity of generating stations using solar and wind energy should be 700 MW; today, 450 MW of this is being developed by a feasibility study with the participation of international consulting companies with the financial support of international financial institutions. This is a relatively new direction for us, but nevertheless concrete work has already begun,” commented Daler Jum’a, Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources.
