Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, better known as Masdar, has signed a project roadmap for the development of a gigawatt-scale wind farm with a battery storage component in Kazakhstan.

Masdar said on Monday that it signed the deal with the country’s energy ministry, the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund (KIDF) Management Company Ltd, and sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna. The latter has also inked a project collaboration deal with the UAE company.

The head of the sovereign wealth fund, CEO Nurlan Zhakupov, stated that the so-called roadmap, or Calendar Action Plan, sets the main activities, responsible parties, and deadlines for the development of the up-to-1-GW wind park. According to the announcement, the first phase of the project will be developed in the Jambyl region.

Kazakhstan aims to achieve a 50% renewables share by 2050 and become carbon neutral by 2060. While this project is Masdar’s first in this particular country, the company has developments in other Central Asian nations such as Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
