Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, or Masdar, on Tuesday announced the signing of joint development agreements for 4 GW of renewable energy capacity with the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).

The partnership involves onshore wind and solar projects, as well as integrated offshore wind and green hydrogen projects, and is intended to help Azerbaijan achieve its goal of generating 30% of its power needs from renewables by 2030.

The signing took place on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week hosted by Masdar. It follows the signing in June 2022 of agreements with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy for the development of 10 GW of renewable energy capacity in the Central Asian country. The new contracts outline the partnership principles for the first 4-GW phase of the 10-GW programme, Masdar said.

According to SOCAR’s statement and Masdar’s previous announcement, the pact will cover 2 GW of offshore wind and hydrogen projects, 1 GW of photovoltaic (PV) projects and 1 GW onshore wind projects.

Masdar is currently developing the 230-MW Garadagh solar power plant in Azerbaijan.

“These agreements will serve to strengthen the already powerful relationship between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Azerbaijan, and are a testament to our shared commitment to diversifying our energy mix and developing low- and zero-carbon solutions,” commented Masdar chairman Ahmed Al Jaber, who is the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and president-designate for the COP28 summit.
