Australia puts green tick on 300-MW solar project in Queensland
Sep 20, 2024 6:04 CESTJan 23, 2012 - Abu Dhabi's state-owned green energy firm Masdar last week said it had agreed with the government of Tonga to set up a 500-kW photovoltaic (PV) plant in the Vava'u Island of Tonga.
Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the project with the Tonga Energy Road Map Implementation Unit, representing the government of Tonga, during the World Future Energy Summit that took part in Abu Dhabi from January 16 to January 19.
Abu Dhabi Fund for Development will provide a grant to finance the project.
The project is part of the Tonga Energy Road Map, a 10-year plan to advance the access to modern energy services, and will generate enough electricity to supply 13% of Tonga's annual need, Masdar said.
Masdar added that the project is also part the company's commitment to the United Nations' Year of Sustainable Energy for All initiative that aims to enable access to modern energy services globally, to double the energy efficiency improvement rate and to double the share of renewables in the global energy mix.
