Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, better known as Masdar, will be exploring the development of solar power plants in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire, starting with one ranging in size from 50 MW to 70 MW.

The company announced on Friday that it signed a framework agreement with the country’s ministry of mining, petroleum and energy as part of a wider UAE-led programme called Etihad 7 that aims to achieve 20 GW of renewable energy capacity in Africa by 2035.

“Cote d'Ivoire has committed under climate change agreements to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 32% and to increase the share of renewable energies in its energy mix to 45% by 2030,” stated minister Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly.

In Africa, Masdar already has developments in Angola, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. One notable project calls for the construction of a 10-GW onshore wind power complex in Egypt in partnership with Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities.
