Masdar, Uzbek govt sign deal for more than 2 GW of renewables

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, better known as Masdar, has signed a deal with the Uzbek government to develop more than 2 GW of solar and wind projects along with 500 MWh of battery energy storage at multiple sites across Uzbekistan.

More specifically, the UAE-based company has entered into a joint development agreement (JDA) with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy (MoE) and the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade (MIIT). It did not mention the exact locations of the proposed developments.

Uzbekistan aims at a 25% renewables share by 2030 and plans to reach 7 GW of solar and 5 GW of wind capacity by then. Masdar has been active in the Central Asian country since 2019 and its current portfolio includes assets such as the 100-MW Nur Navoi solar power plant and the 500-MW Zarafshan wind farm, which is the largest in the region.

Last month, Masdar announced achieving financial close on three new Uzbek solar projects with a combined capacity of 900 MW.
