UAE-based renewables developer Masdar and Uzbekistan’s state hydropower producer and developer JSC Uzbekhydroenergo have agreed to explore the feasibility of the joint realisation of several pumped-storage hydro projects in the Central Asian country.

The agreement signed by the parties marks Masdar’s first entry into the pumped-storage hydro sector. It is aimed at supporting Uzbekistan’s renewable energy strategy by addressing intermittent supply challenges, according to a press statement from Friday.

Masdar is already active in Uzbekistan where it connected to the local grid a combined capacity of 1.4 GW of solar and wind projects in 2023 alone.

Just recently, China’s Trina Solar Co Ltd, in its role as a tracker supplier, unveiled that two solar plants totalling 511 MW, developed and built by the Emirati state-owned company, had connected their first units to the local grid for power generation.
