UAE-based renewables developer Masdar’s Samarkand and Jizzakh solar power plants in Uzbekistan, which have a combined capacity of 511 MW, have recently connected their first units to the local grid for power generation.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by China’s Trina Solar Co Ltd (SHA:688599) which was contracted to provide its Vanguard 1P trackers for the project.

Samarkand and Jizzakh were developed and built by Masdar and contracted by a subsidiary of Dongfang Electric Corporation. Once fully commissioned, the solar site is expected to produce 1.12 TWh of clean power per year, enough to meet the needs of 240,000 homes.

The supply agreement signed with Dongfang Electric marked Trina Solar's second major project in Uzbekistan after the Navoi solar power plant in 2021.
