Portuguese diversified group MCA Group has contracted 319 MWh of lithium-ion batteries from Samsung SDI for a portfolio of energy storage projects in Angola.

The secured E5S units, ordered by MCA Deutschland Gmbh, will be incorporated into a battery storage system (BESS) that will allow the electrification of 48 communes located in five provinces of the country.

The deal will advance the local Rural Electrification Project to deploy "green" electricity distribution infrastructures in three phases. It envisages the construction of 48 hybrid solar systems coupled with off-grid battery storage, targeting an installed capacity of 719 MWh of available energy.

The Rural Electrification Project is implemented by MCA, the Angolan government, a consortium of banks and the German Export Credit Agency - Euler Hermes (ECA). The initiative covers more than 200,000 homes and more than a million people.

Construction works on the project started last year. Completion is anticipated in 2026.
