Maersk Supply Service A/S, part of Denmark’s AP Moller Group, on Tuesday announced the creation of Maersk Offshore Wind, a spin-off that will provide installation services to the offshore wind market based on the Maersk Wind Installation Vessel (Maersk WIV) concept.

The carving out of the offshore installation business comes as Norwegian offshore services provider DOF Group ASA (OSE:DOFG) is buying Maersk Supply Service for about USD 1.112 billion (EUR 1.036bn) in cash and shares. DOF will add 22 vessels to its fleet via the deal.

Denmark-based Maersk Offshore Wind is now owned by AP Moller Holding. It says it can reduce installation time by about 30%.

The first Maersk WIV, currently under construction in Singapore at Seatrium, is due to be delivered in the middle of 2025. It will work on Equinor’s Empire offshore wind project in the US.

“Maersk Offshore Wind’s concept can reduce the installation time of offshore wind turbines by almost one-third, delivering energy to the grid faster and lowering total installation costs increasing the competitiveness of our customers when they bid for new projects,” commented Martin Larsen, CFO of AP Moller Holding and chair of Maersk Offshore Wind.
