Mexico to cover 50% of clean energy needs via wind power - report

Mexico's wind power projects in the next years will be able to meet up to half of the clean energy demand of fossil power generators, El Economista reported on Thursday, quoting Adrian Escofet, president of the Mexican Wind Energy Association, Amdee.

Clean, non-fossil energy will have to represent at least 5% of the mix of power generators and major consumers as of 2018.

According to Escofet, wind farms will surely issue about 50% of the clean energy certificates, similarly to other markets worldwide, although the high share will not be seen in the first years. For now, however, there are pending issues concerning guarantees for the projects that seek contracts with the state.

Mexico plans to hold its first auction of clean energy certificates in March, with national utility Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) being the sole buyer at this stage.
