Swedish thin film solar technology company Midsummer AB (STO:MIDS) will work together with Russian state-owned technology group Rusnano to develop the non-silicon flexible photovoltaics (PV) market in Russia and the Eurasian Union.

The parties have entered into a framework agreement under which Rusnano will use Midsummer’s technology to promote and develop the production of light-weight flexible copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) PV cells and modules. The goal is to establish production and end-user product development in Russia and countries such as Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

The Swedish company noted that the partnership envisages the sourcing of panels made in Russia and the region for worldwide distribution.

“We are systematically developing non-silicon flexible photovoltaics in Russia, the only way feasible – first we transfer and localize technologies, then we upgrade the technology and increase the scale of production in order to meet the demands of the growing market, including export to Midsummer,” explained Ruslan Titov, deputy CEO of Rusnano’s Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs.
