Hungary plans to ease regulations on wind project development in the country, particularly when it comes to distancing rules for turbines, Gergely Gulyas, minister of the Prime Minister's Office, said on Thursday.

Speaking during a Government Info session, minister Gulyas stated that the requirements for the distance between wind turbines and the outer border of settlement areas are planned to be reduced, though, he did not give further details.

The European Commission endorsed Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) at the end of November 2022, subject to the full and effective implementation of certain milestones. According to information shared at the time, the plan comes with a comprehensive package of measures on energy, including significant reforms aimed at promoting renewable energy.

In particular, one reform envisages the elimination of significant regulatory bottlenecks for the installation of wind turbines and the creation of “go-to areas” in the windiest regions. The improvement of the permit-granting procedures for renewable power plants is also planned.
