Minister says Portugal needs to exports renewable energy

Feb 20, 2014 - Portugal's environment and energy minister Jorge Moreira da Silva said yesterday that the country has to start exporting renewable energy and not simply meet the targets set by the European Union (EU).

Portugal has to establish an innovative and ambitious agenda for the renewable power sector. The country could supply power generated from renewable energy sources to third parties and help them meet the EU requirements, the minister added.

Silva spoke at the inauguration of two photovoltaic (PV) power plants of Hypersolar Fotovoltaica in Lisbon, with an installed capacity of 2 MW each. The projects involved investments of a total EUR 11 million (USD 15.1m) and will allow the reduction of some 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. The generated electricity will meet the consumption of 2,650 homes.

Hypersolar Fotovoltaica plans opening of other two PV plants in the short term, in Coruche and Montemor-o-Velho, with capacity of 6 MW and 2 MW, respectively.
