Ministers confirmed at BEIS department of UK govt

The ministerial team at the UK's newly created Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has been confirmed today.

In a cabinet overhaul by Theresa May, who took over as prime minister on July 13, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) was merged with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), creating the new BEIS department. Greg Clark, former communities secretary, was put in charge of BEIS.

Nick Hurd has now been confirmed as minister of state for climate change and industry. An MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, he served as a minister in the Department for International Development from November 2015 until July 2016, where his responsibilities included climate and environment and leading the Energy Africa campaign. Hurd is also a former minister for civil society. He said on Twitter that it was time for climate change and industrial policy to be brought together more closely.

Baroness Neville-Rolfe has been appointed minister of state for energy and intellectual property, while Jesse Norman is minister for industry and energy.

The new department's responsibilities will include ensuring that the UK has secure energy supplies that are reliable, affordable and clean, as well as tackling climate change, according to the announcement today.
