Mitsubishi Electric Corp (TYO:6503) has received an order to supply an energy management system for a 240-MW/720-MWh battery storage plant in Japan, the company says in an announcement from yesterday.

Mitsubishi Electric’s BLEnDer RE energy management system will monitor and control the battery and power conditioners (PCS) of an energy storage system at the Kita-Toyotomi Substation in Toyotomi, Teshio, Hokkaido. The station’s proprietor is North Hokkaido Wind Energy Transmission Corporation.

The order was made by Chiyoda Corporation, which is in charge of the design, engineering and construction of the so-called Grid Reinforcement Pilot Project for Wind Turbines, led by North Hokkaido with the support of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.

North Hokkaido's plan is to deploy transmission facilities and batteries to enable more than 500 MW of wind power generating capacity to be hooked to the grid in northern Hokkaido. The batteries should contribute to the stable power supply.

The energy storage system is seen to become operational by March 2023. Mitsubishi Electric said it believes this will be the world’s largest such system.
