Elektro Ljubljana banks EUR-50m EIB loan for grid expansion, upgrade
Sep 02, 2024 15:52 CESTSlovenian wireless operator Mobitel said it has connected to its network the first power self-sufficient base station in the country.
The base station in Podkraj, in southwestern Slovenia, will use solar and wind energy to provide signal in an area where mobile services have been impossible so far due to the inaccessibility of energy infrastructure, the company said in a statement on its website.
The surplus energy produced by the photovoltaic and wind generators will be stored in batteries which will power the facility when there is no sun or wind, thus ensuring uninterrupted operation.
The electricity generating base station also represents a significant innovation in the field of mobile network development, since efficient use of energy resources is opening new possibilities of network planning, independent of the existing infrastructure. Plans for network upgrades in the same direction are already underway, the statement said.
