Once up and running, the solar plant is expected to produce 3,820 MWh of green electricity in the first year of operation, offsetting 2,400 tonnes of carbon emissions.
The clean electricity will be supplied to the factory under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Yellow Door Energy.
“This project will enable us to convert 24% of our energy usage into clean energy, which represents a major milestone in our sustainability agenda, in line with our global commitment to achieve net zero emissions across our full value chain by 2050,” said plant manager Salah El Marasy.
Under the terms of the deal, Yellow Door Energy will finance, design, build and operate the solar plant.
Mondelez's biscuits factory in Bahrain produces brands such as Oreo cookies, Barni soft cakes, Tang powdered beverages and belVita biscuits for local consumers and serves as a hub for exports to the Gulf region, the Levant, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
