Eight bidding companies and consortia have been pre-qualified in the tender for the development and construction of the 400-MW Noor Midelt III solar power complex in Morocco, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) announced.

The list of successful proponents was released following a competition that was launched at the end of this past summer. It enables the shortlisted developers to proceed to the next round of the selection process. The winning developer will be in charge of the design, funding, construction, operation, and maintenance of the photovoltaic (PV) park near the town of Midelt in the Atlas mountains, along with a 400-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

The list of pre-qualified candidates includes a consortium of UAE-based Masdar and TAQA Morocco; Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Nareva Holding; EDF Renouvelables and Japan’s Mitsui & Co, among others. Spanish Iberdrola Renovables Internacional was the only solely participating proponent. The full list is available on Masen’s website.

Noor Midelt III is the third phase of the massive Noor Midelt project. France’s EDF, Masdar and Green of Africa were in 2019 selected to build the first stage – an 800-MW complex using both PV and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. The tender for the 400-MW Noor Midelt II has still not been completed.
