Mott MacDonald to monitor work on 55-MW Mongolian wind project

UK-based firm Mott MacDonald said Tuesday it has been selected to monitor the construction and operations of the 55-MW Sainshand wind park in Mongolia’s Gobi desert.

The engineering and development consultancy has also served as lenders’ technical, environmental and social advisor during the financing phase of the scheme. Financial close on the project was reached last week after Engie (EPA:ENGI) secured USD 120 million (EUR 100m) in loans from a group of international lenders and financial institutions.

Mott MacDonald’s due diligence before reaching financial close included the review of early stage designs, project schedule, contractual arrangements, construction and operational plans as well as energy yield assessment. The UK firm has also conducted environmental and social impact analyses, it said.

The Sainshand wind farm will consist of 25 Vestas V110 2.2 MW wind turbines, to be installed near Sainshand city, in the province of Dornogobi. Once up and running, the plant will generate about 190,000 MWh of electricity, or enough to supply around 130,000 homes. Commissioning is planned for the first half of 2019.

The company behind the project is Sainshand Salkhin Park LLC, a special purpose limited liability entity owned by Engie, the Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), Germany-based Ferrostaal GmbH and a local partner.
